What The Waters Owed is a short historical fiction/fantasy story that is 3,056 words in length. It deals with themes of child death and parental loss, and has depictions of dead bodies in it.
Long ago in the Hebrides, a tiny fishing village had a tradition of turning to spaewives to hear their fortunes. Iohne, eager to see his son Gelis declared a man with his first successful fishing trip, takes the (far too young) boy out when he decides a prophecy is meant for him. But Iohne and Gelis are caught up in a bigger story, and what the waters owe may not be meant for them at all.
